What Is Employee Engagement? 

The concept of employee engagement in human resources (HR) refers to how enthusiastic and committed an employee is about their work. Employees that are engaged feel that their efforts matter and are concerned about both the company's performance and their job. An engaged worker is motivated by more than their salary and may see their own happiness as a direct result of their output and a crucial component of their organization's success(Smith, 2022).

Since that employee engagement is directly related to job satisfaction and motivation, it can be very important to a business's success. An essential component of growing and maintaining employee engagement is interaction. Employee engagement increases the probability of higher performance and productivity. They frequently show a stronger dedication to the principles and objectives of an organization.

Human resources management and employee engagement

Since the 1990s, employee engagement has been regarded as a component of management theory, and in the 2000s, it gained widespread acceptance. Employee engagement has a few critics, primarily because of how hard it is to quantify, but research has shown a clear correlation between it and a company's financial stability and profitability (Saks, 2021).

Two important and closely related aspects of the workplace are employee engagement. Employee engagement is about fostering a positive and satisfying work environment, whereas performance management is about establishing and reaching goals and targets (Rollet, 2023).

High performance depends on engaged workers because they are more efficient, stronger team players, and more likely to remain around the business. Employee disengagement, on the other hand, can result in lower morale, less output, and higher turnover rates. That is why reaching high performance requires a non-negotiable focus on employee engagement. Here are some useful suggestions that any manager can implement on a daily basis to increase employee engagement through performance management best practices. Before getting started, it's critical to understand the bigger picture of employee engagement and the importance of concentrating on retention, well-being, communication facilitation, rewards and recognition, and the use of appropriate tools and technology.


Example of Employee Engagement

Concerned about the high rate of injuries at its Fremont auto assembly plant, Tesla (TSLA) implemented a more open line of communication as a strategy for employee engagement to increase safety. In order to accomplish this, Elon Musk, the CEO and co-founder of the electric car manufacturer, informed staff members that he needed to know about every injury sustained so he could determine what steps needed to be taken to stop similar incidents from happening again.

In order to identify areas where safety can be improved, Musk even carries out the same task with injured workers on the production line. According to a company blog post, this employee engagement initiative resulted in a more than 50% decrease in worker-harmed incidents in 2019 compared to 2018.
